Released in 1998, Hameln represents the final and most refined stage of In Extremo's purely acoustic period. While the band is now synonymous with the 'Medieval Metal' genre they helped pioneer, Hameln contains almost no electric instrumentation, focusing instead on authentic period instruments like the nyckelharpa, shawm, and bagpipes. The album serves as a bridge between their early experimental street-performer roots and the structured songwriting of their breakthrough 'Verehrt und Angespien'. It is notable for its inclusion of the 'Merseburger Zaubersprüche', which would become a career-defining anthem for the band.
