Gothic Kabbalah

Released in 2007, Gothic Kabbalah is one of Therion's most ambitious and distinct works. It marks a significant departure from the 'Wagnerian Metal' style established on albums like Vovin. For the first time, bandleader Christofer Johnsson stepped back from being the sole composer, allowing the Niemann brothers and Mats Levén to contribute significantly to the songwriting. This resulted in a more guitar-driven, progressive sound reminiscent of 70s hard rock and bands like Symphony X. The album is a concept piece centered on the life of Swedish mystic Johannes Bureus and his blend of Runic lore and Kabbalah. It is notable for introducing Lori Lewis, who would become a staple of the band's sound. Critics praised the album for its melodic accessibility and vocal performances, though some long-time fans were surprised by the reduced emphasis on a full orchestra in favor of a more 'rock' ensemble feel.
