Helsinki / Suomi

Released in 1999 on the Chain Reaction label, Helsinki / Suomi is a pivotal EP in Sasu Ripatti's discography. While his later work as Luomo would explore house music and his work as Uusitalo would lean into more rhythmic experiments, this release is the quintessential 'Delay' sound: dub-influenced ambient techno that feels deeply rooted in the geography of its title. The tracks are characterized by their use of digital noise as a primary melodic element, a technique that helped define the glitch movement of the era. Unlike the clinical precision of some of his peers, Ripatti's work here feels tactile and weathered, as if the sounds have been subjected to the elements. The EP serves as a bridge between the minimal techno of Berlin and the more experimental, textural electronic music emerging from Finland at the turn of the millennium. It remains a high-water mark for the Chain Reaction aesthetic.
