Released in 1996, Structures is a definitive statement of the mid-90s UK electronic underground, specifically the intersection of ambient techno and the emerging IDM movement. While RAC (not to be confused with the later remix project) shares DNA with the early Warp Records 'Artificial Intelligence' sound, this album leans harder into the 'murky' and 'dusty' textures of analog hardware. The eight tracks are remarkably consistent in their pacing, mostly hovering around the five-to-six-minute mark, allowing each sonic environment to fully establish itself before shifting. Critically, the album is noted for its use of tape saturation and noise as intentional instruments, creating a sense of 'urban decay' that was highly influential in the downtempo and glitch scenes.
