Hootie Mack

Released in 1993 as the follow-up to their massive debut Poison, Hootie Mack saw Bell Biv DeVoe attempting to mature their sound while maintaining their 'hip-hop smoothed out on an R&B tip' ethos. Produced by a roster of heavyweights including L.A. Reid, Babyface, and Chris Stokes, the album shifted away from the raw, industrial-leaning swingbeats of the Bomb Squad toward a more melodic, polished urban contemporary sound. Despite the high expectations, it achieved Gold certification and produced the hit 'Something in Your Eyes.' The record is notable for its inclusion of 'Gangsta,' which showcases the group's rap-heavy side, and 'The Situation,' which utilizes the call-and-response dynamics they perfected in New Edition.
