Released in 1990, Poison served as the debut for the New Edition spin-off trio Bell Biv DeVoe. While their parent group was known for wholesome teen pop, BBD pivoted toward a 'mentally hip-hop, smoothed out on the R&B side' aesthetic. The album is a cornerstone of the New Jack Swing movement, largely due to its diverse production team.
