Immutable marks a significant tonal shift for Meshuggah, moving away from the ultra-compressed digital aesthetic of 'The Violent Sleep of Reason' toward a more natural, expansive production style. Recorded at Sweetspot Studios in Sweden, the album is their longest to date, featuring a diverse array of structures including the nearly ten-minute instrumental 'They Move Below' and the short, eerie 'Black Cathedral'. It also marks the return of lead guitarist Fredrik Thordendal to the recording process, though much of the songwriting was handled by Mårten Hagström. Critics noted the album's 'cinematic' quality and its willingness to explore slower, more atmospheric tempos without sacrificing the band's signature polymetric complexity.
