Meshuggah

Meshuggah is the primary architect of modern technical metal, specifically the 'djent' movement, though they have largely transcended that label. Formed in 1987 in Sweden, their evolution from thrash-influenced beginnings to a singular, polymetric style redefined the possibilities of the genre.

Their sound identity is built on 'polymeters over a steady 4/4 pulse,' where the drums and guitars play different time signatures that eventually realign. This 'Einstein metal' approach is supported by Fredrik Thordendal's Holdsworth-influenced jazz fusion solos and Jens Kidman's distinctive, non-melodic vocal delivery. Critically, they are viewed as one of the most important metal bands of the last 30 years, bridging the gap between extreme death metal and avant-garde experimentation. Their influence is visible in almost every modern progressive metal act, from Gojira to Animals as Leaders. Despite their complexity, they maintain a 'groove metal' sensibility that has earned them a massive cult following and mainstream critical respect, including multiple Grammy nominations.
