Invasion

Released in 2006 on Big Apple Records, Invasion is a seminal document of the early dubstep movement, capturing Benga at a point of high creative purity. Unlike his later, more melodic work like 'Diary of an Afro Warrior', this album is a starker, more rhythmic affair that bridges the gap between dark garage, grime, and the emerging dubstep sound. The tracks are characterized by their 'wobble' basslines - a technique Benga helped pioneer - but they are used here with a restraint that emphasizes the groove rather than the spectacle. The production is famously minimalist, often consisting of little more than a syncopated drum pattern, a deep sub-bass hook, and a few eerie synth flourishes. This record solidified Benga's reputation as a technical innovator who could create immense physical impact using very few elements, a philosophy that defined the South London electronic scene during this era.
