L.D. 50 is the debut studio album by Mudvayne, released in 2000 during the height of the nu-metal movement. However, the album quickly distinguished itself through its 'math metal' leanings and technical proficiency, particularly the jazz-influenced slap-bass technique of Ryan Martinie and the complex drumming of Matt McDonough. Produced by Garth Richardson and executive produced by Slipknot's Shawn Crahan, the record features a crisp, punchy production that highlights the interplay between the instruments. The album is structured with several ambient interludes ('Monolith', 'Golden Ratio', etc.) that provide a conceptual framework centered on evolution and consciousness.
