The Blackening

Released in 2007, The Blackening represents the creative zenith of Machine Head, marking their transition into a more progressive and technical thrash sound. Following the success of Through the Ashes of Empires, the band doubled down on complexity, resulting in an album where four of the eight original tracks exceed nine minutes. Recorded with Robb Flynn producing and Colin Richardson mixing, the album achieved a sonic density that became a benchmark for the era. The lyrical themes are notably more political and reactionary than previous efforts, specifically 'Aesthetics of Hate,' which was written in response to a derogatory article about the late Dimebag Darrell. This track earned the band a Grammy nomination. Critics widely hailed the album as a masterpiece, with many publications, including Metal Hammer, later naming it the album of the decade. It remains a cornerstone of 2000s metal, blending the aggression of thrash with the melodic sensibilities of classic heavy metal.
