Light Extracts

Released in 2001 (with later digital reissues), Light Extracts is the definitive sophomore statement from Eivind Aarset's Électronique Noire project. Following his breakthrough debut, this album solidified Aarset's reputation as one of the most innovative guitarists in the European 'Nu Jazz' movement centered around Bugge Wesseltoft's Jazzland label. Sonically, the album is a departure from traditional jazz structures, favoring long-form textural development and the integration of drum-and-bass and trip-hop rhythmic sensibilities. The recording features a core group of Norwegian heavyweights, including Wetle Holte and Marius Reksjø, who provide the elastic, dub-influenced foundations for Aarset's heavily processed guitar work. Critically, it is often cited alongside Nils Petter Molvær's 'Khmer' as a cornerstone of the Nordic electronic-jazz fusion sound, praised for its ability to maintain a human, emotive core despite its heavy reliance on digital manipulation and cold, atmospheric production.
