Megalodon

Released in 2013, Megalodon is the definitive statement from Danish project Guttural Slug and a cornerstone of the 'slamming brutal death metal' (SBDM) scene. While many of their peers focused on speed, Guttural Slug leaned into a mid-tempo, sludge-influenced crawl that emphasized the physical weight of the music. The album is most famous for its 'cricket' or 'drain' vocals - a technique that produces a wet, gurgling sound almost entirely devoid of discernible phonemes. This vocal style, paired with the nautical horror themes of tracks like 'Sirens Halo' and 'Eyes of the Cyclops,' created a unique niche within the genre. Despite its short runtime of under twenty minutes, the album's influence is massive, often cited as a gateway for listeners into the more extreme, rhythmic-focused corners of death metal.
