Pantera

Pantera is the definitive architect of groove metal, a subgenre that bridged the gap between 80s thrash and the diverse metal landscape of the 2000s. Formed in Texas, the band underwent a radical transformation from glam metal beginnings to a harder, more aggressive sound following the recruitment of vocalist Phil Anselmo.

Their 1990 breakthrough, 'Cowboys From Hell', introduced a syncopated, riff-heavy approach that prioritized rhythmic 'swing' over the straight-ahead speed of their contemporaries. The band's sound is anchored by the virtuosic guitar work of Dimebag Darrell, whose use of the 'scooped mid' tone and whammy-bar acrobatics became a standard for the genre. Throughout the 1990s, they achieved unprecedented commercial success for an extreme metal act, with 'Far Beyond Driven' debuting at number one on the Billboard 200.
