Microgravity

Released in 1991 on the Apollo sub-label of R&S Records, Microgravity is the debut album from Geir Jenssen under the Biosphere moniker. Following his departure from the synth-pop group Bel Canto, Jenssen pivoted toward a sound that synthesized his fascination with science fiction and his Norwegian environment. While often categorized as ambient house, the album distinguishes itself through a darker, more 'sinister' tone than the psychedelic optimism of the UK scene. It heavily utilizes vocal samples from films and documentaries to ground its abstract textures in narrative mystery. The production is characterized by deep, dubby basslines and crisp drum machine patterns that provide a skeletal framework for expansive, reverb-drenched pads. Historically, it is cited as a pivotal release in the development of ambient techno, marking the transition from the rave era's 'chill-out' rooms to the more serious, conceptual electronic music of the mid-90s.
