Biosphere is the primary project of Norwegian musician Geir Jenssen, a pivotal figure in the evolution of ambient music. Emerging from the synth-pop group Bel Canto, Jenssen transitioned into electronic production in the early 1990s, initially exploring 'ambient house' on Microgravity and Patashnik.
However, it was 1997's Substrata that cemented his legacy, moving away from 4/4 beats toward a pure, atmospheric sound often labeled 'Arctic Ambient.' His work is defined by a high degree of spatial awareness, utilizing field recordings from his home in Tromsø and expeditions to the Himalayas. Critically, he is lauded for his ability to make digital instruments sound organic and environmental. His influence is vast, bridging the gap between the 70s ambient of Brian Eno and the modern minimalist movements of artists like Loscil and Gas. Throughout his career, Jenssen has maintained a consistent aesthetic of 'cold' beauty while evolving through phases of glitch, neo-classical, and drone, always anchored by his signature use of hypnotic loops and evocative sampling.
