Mother's Daughter and Other Songs

Released in 2005, Mother's Daughter and Other Songs is the debut studio album by the British collective Tunng. It is widely regarded as a cornerstone of the 'folktronica' movement, a genre that emerged in the early 2000s blending traditional folk instrumentation with laptop-based electronic production. The album was primarily the work of Sam Genders and Mike Lindsay, who recorded much of the material in a basement studio in Soho, London. Unlike many of their peers who used electronics as mere atmospheric backing, Tunng integrated glitch and found-sound samples into the very rhythmic DNA of their songs. The track 'Tale from Black' gained significant traction after being featured in John Peel's Festive Fifty, cementing the band's reputation within the UK independent scene. Critics praised the album for its whimsical yet eerie atmosphere, noting how it successfully bridged the gap between the pastoral heritage of British folk and the experimental frontiers of IDM.
