Phaedra

Released in 1974, Phaedra represents the pivotal moment when Tangerine Dream transitioned from the avant-garde 'Pink Years' into the sequencer-driven 'Virgin Years.' It is widely credited with inventing the 'Berlin School' of electronic music. Recorded at Manor Studios, the album was largely improvised, with the 17-minute title track capturing the band grappling with the instability of early Moog modular systems. The technical limitations of the era - specifically the tendency of oscillators to drift as they warmed up - became a defining aesthetic feature of the record. While it was a commercial breakthrough in the UK, reaching the Top 15, it was initially ignored in the band's native Germany. The album features the classic lineup of Edgar Froese, Christopher Franke, and Peter Baumann, and remains a touchstone for the use of the Mellotron and the analog sequencer as primary compositional tools.
