Oedipus Tyrannus

Recorded in 1974 at the Manor Studio but unreleased for decades, Oedipus Tyrannus is a significant archival discovery for Tangerine Dream scholars. Originally intended as a score for a stage production of Sophocles' tragedy directed by Keith Hack, the music captures the classic line-up of Edgar Froese, Christopher Franke, and Peter Baumann at a pivotal moment. Sonically, it bridges the gap between the experimental 'Pink Years' (Zeit, Atem) and the sequencer-driven 'Virgin Years' (Phaedra, Rubycon). The tracks are long-form improvisations that utilize the VCS3 and Moog modular systems to create an ominous, theatrical atmosphere. While some elements were repurposed for later albums, this complete recording reveals a darker, more classical-leaning side of the band's early output. It was finally released as part of the 'In Search of Hades' box set before receiving standalone attention, praised for its fidelity and historical weight.
