Alpha Centauri

Released in 1971, Alpha Centauri marks the beginning of Tangerine Dream's 'Pink Years' on the Ohr label and their first significant move toward the 'Kosmische Musik' they would eventually define. This is the first album to feature Christopher Franke, whose arrival shifted the band's focus from the psychedelic rock of 'Electronic Meditation' toward more abstract, electronic soundscapes. Notably, the album relies heavily on the VCS3 synthesizer and the Farfisa organ rather than the sequencers that would later become their trademark. The inclusion of flute and traditional percussion gives the record a haunting, ritualistic quality that bridges the gap between avant-garde jazz and early ambient music. Critics often cite this as the true birth of the 'Berlin School' sound, though it is far more dissonant and experimental than the melodic sequences of 'Phaedra'. It stands as a landmark of German experimentalism, capturing a band in the process of inventing a new genre.
