Wooden Arms

Released in 2009, Wooden Arms represents a significant evolution in Patrick Watson's sound, moving away from the more traditional 'indie-classical' textures of Close to Paradise toward a more experimental, percussion-heavy approach. Recorded partly in France and Montreal, the album was heavily influenced by the band's desire to use the environment as an instrument. This resulted in a 'kitchen-sink' orchestration style where everyday objects - spoons, logs, and bicycles - were used to create complex rhythmic beds. Critics at the time, including those from Pitchfork and NME, noted the album's shift toward a more 'organic' and 'unconventional' sound, often comparing it to the work of Tom Waits or Andrew Bird. The track 'Beijing' showcases the album's travel-inspired narrative, while 'Big Bird in a Small Cage' highlights Watson's ability to blend traditional folk structures with avant-garde arrangements. It remains a standout in his catalog for its unique tactile production and its successful marriage of high-art chamber pop with lo-fi, found-sound experimentation.
