Primordial Arcana marks a significant milestone for Wolves in the Throne Room, as it was the first album entirely produced, recorded, mixed, and mastered by the band themselves in their own Owl Lodge studio. This DIY approach resulted in a sound that is perhaps the most authentic representation of their 'Cascadian' vision to date. While the band has always been associated with atmospheric black metal, this record leans more heavily into symphonic and folk elements, utilizing woodwinds and cellos to create a richer, more cinematic texture. The album moves away from the long-form, twenty-minute compositions of their earlier career in favor of more concise, punchy tracks that still maintain their signature ritualistic atmosphere. Critics noted that while it retains the ferocity of black metal, it possesses a warmth and clarity often missing from the genre, cementing the band's status as leaders of the American black metal scene.
