Released in 2013, Heritage represents a pivotal shift for David Grellier (College) following the massive global success of 'A Real Hero.' While his previous work leaned into the neon-bright, driving aesthetics of synthwave, Heritage is a more introspective and ambient-leaning project. The album is entirely instrumental, focusing on the evocative power of analog synthesizers to tell a story of legacy and memory. Recorded with a clear reverence for 1970s and 80s pioneers like Vangelis and John Carpenter, the production is notably drier and more intimate than the reverb-soaked anthems of his earlier EPs. Critics noted its cinematic quality, often describing it as a 'imaginary soundtrack' that prioritizes mood over melody. It solidified College's reputation as a serious composer within the electronic scene, moving beyond the 'Drive' soundtrack association into a more mature, experimental territory that explores the intersection of technology and human emotion.
