Released in 2004 on his own Pookie Entertainment label after departing Universal, Ray Ray represents Raphael Saadiq’s creative liberation. Moving away from the 'Instant Vintage' sound, Saadiq embraced a concept inspired by 1970s blaxploitation cinema and the work of Rudy Ray Moore. The album is characterized by a deliberate 'looseness' in production, utilizing Michael Angelo and Kelvin Wooten to achieve a saturated, analog feel. It features notable collaborations with Joi, Teedra Moses, and Babyface, yet remains centered on Saadiq’s virtuoso bass playing and multi-instrumental arrangements. Critics noted its departure from the 'studied' nature of contemporary R&B, praising its grit and mischievous spirit. While it saw less commercial success than his debut, it solidified Saadiq’s reputation as a master of retro-soul craftsmanship who could successfully integrate hip-hop sensibilities with authentic funk traditions.
