Rubycon

Released in 1975, Rubycon is widely considered the creative zenith of Tangerine Dream's 'Virgin Years' and a definitive document of the Berlin School of electronic music. Recorded at The Manor with engineer Mike Glossop, the album refined the sequencer-heavy innovations of its predecessor, Phaedra, into a more cohesive and polished two-part suite. The trio of Edgar Froese, Christopher Franke, and Peter Baumann utilized an array of Moog modular synthesizers, Mellotrons, and modified organs to create a sound that was entirely divorced from the blues-based structures of 1970s rock. Its title, referencing Caesar's crossing of the Rubicon, signifies a 'point of no return,' mirroring the band's total commitment to purely electronic textures. Historically, it remains a massive influence on ambient, trance, and film scoring, standing as a bridge between the experimental krautrock of the early 70s and the more structured electronic music that followed.
