Skank

Released independently in 1992 before being picked up by Sony's Chaos imprint, Skank's self-titled debut is a foundational text for 90s Brazilian rock. While the band would later become synonymous with polished Britpop-influenced radio hits, this record is a much rawer exploration of ska, dancehall, and reggae. Recorded with a modest budget, the album features prominent brass arrangements and a heavy emphasis on the rhythm section of Lelo Zaneti and Haroldo Ferretti. The track 'Tanto' is a notable Portuguese adaptation of Bob Dylan's 'I Want You,' showcasing Samuel Rosa's ability to translate folk-rock sensibilities into a reggae framework. 'In(dig)nação' served as a generational anthem during a period of political upheaval in Brazil. The album's success (selling 250,000 copies) proved that independent regional scenes could dictate national trends, effectively launching the 'Mineiro' rock explosion of the 1990s.
