Soulburner

Released in January 2000, Soulburner represents Gardenian's high-water mark and their debut for the powerhouse label Nuclear Blast. Following their more traditional debut, this record saw the band leaning heavily into the melodic possibilities of the Gothenburg scene, pioneered by peers like In Flames and Dark Tranquillity. The album is notable for the guitar work of Niclas Engelin, who would later become a permanent fixture in In Flames, and his signature style of rhythmic, harmonized riffing is all over this release. The production, handled at Studio Fredman, is quintessential for the era: clear, powerful, and layered.
