Spiritual Unity is a pivotal recording in Marc Ribot's discography, serving as both a tribute to free jazz pioneer Albert Ayler and a manifesto for Ribot's own 'downtown' aesthetic. Released in 2005 on Pi Recordings, the album is notable for the inclusion of bassist Henry Grimes, who had famously disappeared from the music scene for decades after playing with Ayler himself. This connection lends the project immense historical weight. Sonically, Ribot replaces Ayler's signature tenor saxophone with a jagged, distorted electric guitar style that draws as much from no wave and punk as it does from jazz.
