Tangents

Released in September 1994, Tangents is a pivotal EP in the discography of RAC (not to be confused with the later remix project of the same name). Coming out during the peak of the Intelligent Dance Music movement in the UK, it bridges the gap between the dancefloor-oriented techno of the early 90s and the more abstract, home-listening ambient techno that would define the decade's middle years. The four tracks showcase a preoccupation with analog synthesis and the physical properties of sound, particularly the way oscillators can be pushed to create 'tangential' harmonics. The production is characterized by a dry, intimate quality that avoids the lush reverbs of contemporary ambient, opting instead for a gritty, tape-saturated realism. Critically, it is often cited alongside the works of Black Dog Productions and early Autechre for its ability to humanize rigid machine rhythms through subtle modulation and atmospheric depth.
