The $5.98 E.P.: Garage Days Re‐Revisited

Released in August 1987, 'The $5.98 E.P.: Garage Days Re-Revisited' served as a crucial transitional bridge for Metallica. Following the tragic death of bassist Cliff Burton, the EP marked the recording debut of Jason Newsted. To integrate Newsted and decompress from the 'Master of Puppets' era, the band converted Lars Ulrich's garage into a studio, aiming for a raw, 'un-produced' sound. The tracklist consists entirely of covers of New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) and hardcore punk bands that influenced their sound. Notable for its high bass presence - a stark contrast to the later '...And Justice for All' - the EP was intentionally priced low to prevent fans from being overcharged for a short release. It remains a fan favorite for its spontaneity and for showcasing the band's foundational influences in a high-energy, rehearsal-room setting.
