Black Metal

Released in 1982, Venom's second studio album is arguably the most influential document in the history of extreme metal. While the band themselves considered their music 'Black Metal' as a marketing term to distance themselves from the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, they inadvertently provided the blueprint for thrash, death, and black metal. The production is notoriously lo-fi, a result of both budgetary constraints and a deliberate aesthetic choice to sound 'heavier' than the polished acts of the era. Conrad 'Cronos' Lant's distorted bass and gravelly vocals, paired with Mantas's proto-thrash riffing, created a sonic template that prioritized atmosphere and aggression over technical proficiency. The album's lyrical focus on Satanism and the occult became a standard for the genre, though Venom's approach retained a gritty, street-level rock and roll spirit often absent in later, more atmospheric black metal bands.
