The Last Wave

Released in 1996, The Last Wave is the debut of the supergroup Arcana and stands as one of the final recorded documents of drumming icon Tony Williams before his death in 1997. The project was spearheaded by bassist and producer Bill Laswell, who sought to bridge the gap between the avant-garde 'skronk' of Derek Bailey and the high-velocity fusion Williams pioneered with Lifetime. The album is almost entirely improvised, yet it possesses a structural weight rarely found in free music, largely due to Laswell's 'collision' production style. Critics from AllMusic and The Penguin Guide to Jazz have noted its 'interstellar power,' highlighting how Bailey’s idiosyncratic, non-idiomatic guitar playing creates a unique tension against the 'throbbing rhythmic grooves' of the rhythm section.
