The Law

Released in 1992, The Law is the second and final album of Exhorder's initial run, cementing their legacy as the primary architects of groove metal. While their debut, Slaughter in the Vatican, was a high-speed thrash milestone, The Law saw the band slowing down to emphasize syncopation and rhythmic complexity. This shift was highly influential, often cited as a major precursor to the sound popularized by Pantera on Vulgar Display of Power. Recorded at Morrisound Recording, the album features a dry, punchy production that highlights the technical interplay between guitarists Jay Ceravolo and Vinnie LaBella. The inclusion of a Black Sabbath cover and the doom-inflected closing track (Cadence of) The Dirge signaled the band's willingness to experiment with tempo and atmosphere beyond the confines of traditional thrash. Despite internal friction leading to a long hiatus shortly after its release, the album remains a cult classic of the NOLA metal scene.
