The Puppet Master

Released in 2003, The Puppet Master is widely considered one of King Diamond's finest conceptual achievements. Set in 18th-century Budapest, the narrative follows a protagonist who discovers the horrific secret behind a local puppet show: the puppets are living humans, surgically altered and kept in a state of undead servitude. Sonically, the album maintains the band's signature blend of Mercyful Fate-inspired riffing and neoclassical leads but introduces a more melodic, almost melancholic sensibility. This was the first album to feature Livia Zita, whose contributions became a staple of the band's later sound. Critically, it was praised for its cohesive plot and the chemistry between the guitarists. It stands as a definitive example of 'Horror Metal,' successfully bridging the gap between extreme lyrical themes and highly accessible, traditional heavy metal song structures.
