Vargnatt

Released in 1993 as a demo/EP, Vargnatt represents the genesis of Ulver, one of the most chameleonic entities in heavy music. While contemporary Norwegian acts like Mayhem or Darkthrone were refining a singular, cold aesthetic, Ulver used their debut to showcase a startling breadth of influences. The recording is famously lo-fi, characterized by significant tape hiss and a primitive mix, yet it contains sophisticated musical ideas including jazz-influenced bass playing and complex vocal arrangements. It is historically significant as one of the first recordings to successfully integrate black metal with authentic folk elements, a style they would later perfect on Bergtatt. The presence of Garm's (Kristoffer Rygg) clean, operatic vocals alongside traditional black metal rasps was a radical departure for the scene at the time. Critics often view Vargnatt as a rough but vital blueprint for the band's career-long obsession with subverting genre expectations.
