Vargstenen

Released in 2007, Vargstenen (The Wolf Stone) represents the creative peak of Månegarm's middle period, fully realizing the 'Viking Metal' sound they helped pioneer. Unlike their earlier, rawer black metal efforts, this album leans heavily into a conceptual narrative following a man's transformation into a wolf. The production is notably warmer and more organic than its predecessors, allowing the prominent violin work of Janne Liljeqvist to sit at the forefront of the mix. Critically, it is often cited as one of the most authentic folk metal albums of the decade due to its use of traditional Swedish scales and clean, polyphonic vocal arrangements that echo ancient choral traditions.
