We Are the Void

Released in 2010, We Are the Void marks Dark Tranquillity's tenth studio outing and represents a deepening of the electronic and atmospheric elements introduced on earlier works like Character and Fiction. Recorded at the band's own Rogue Music and mixed by Tue Madsen, the album features the debut of bassist Daniel Antonsson. Sonically, it is characterized by a significant increase in keyboard presence, courtesy of Martin Brändström, which often takes a lead role over the guitars. Critics at the time noted that while the album didn't reinvent the band's established 'Gothenburg sound,' it refined it into a darker, more somber experience. The closing track, 'Iridium,' is particularly notable for its departure from standard melodic death metal tempos, leaning into a gothic-doom aesthetic that would influence the band's later, more experimental direction. It stands as a bridge between their aggressive mid-career peak and their more atmospheric later works.
