Wind in the Wires

Released in 2005, Wind in the Wires is Patrick Wolf's second studio album and is widely considered his most cohesive and atmospheric work. Recorded largely in isolation on the coast of Cornwall and Devon, the album serves as a sonic travelogue of the English shoreline. Wolf, a multi-instrumentalist, performed nearly all the instruments himself, including the viola, which acts as the album's melodic spine. The record is a landmark of the mid-2000s 'folktronica' movement, though it leans more heavily into 'chamber folk' and 'maritime gothic' than its peers. It marked a transition from the bedroom-glitch of his debut, Lycanthropy, toward a more expansive, orchestral sound, while retaining a lo-fi, experimental edge. Critics often highlight its use of field recordings - wind, waves, and footsteps - which weave the tracks into a continuous narrative of displacement and homecoming.
