Ancient

Ancient is a pivotal figure in the second wave of Norwegian black metal, originating in Bergen in 1992. Initially a solo project for Aphazel, the band's early output like 'Svartalvheim' is regarded as a classic of the raw, forest-obsessed style.

However, Ancient's trajectory was unique; following Aphazel's move to the USA and later Italy, the band's sound expanded to incorporate symphonic and gothic elements. This evolution placed them in a creative lineage alongside bands like Old Man's Child and Dimmu Borgir, though Ancient maintained a more idiosyncratic, often mid-tempo approach. Their signing to Metal Blade Records in the mid-90s was a significant moment for the genre's commercial viability. Critically, they are noted for their 'The Cainian Chronicle' era, which blended black metal tremolo with narrative structures and atmospheric synths. While the lineup has been fluid, the band's core identity remains rooted in a specific brand of melodic, theatrical darkness that bridges the gap between raw black metal and gothic metal.
