is widely considered a landmark of the melodic black metal subgenre, alongside works by Dissection and Sacramentum. Their sound identity is characterized by high-speed tremolo picking, blast-beat percussion, and a prominent use of keyboards and acoustic interludes that suggest a progressive sensibility. Throughout their career, they have cycled through periods of experimentation, notably on 'Pieces of Primal Expressionism,' which incorporated more avant-garde and symphonic elements. After a decade-long hiatus starting in 2005, their 2016 reformation and subsequent releases on Season of Mist have seen them return to a more direct, yet still highly melodic, black metal style.
