Azrael

Azrael (US) is a seminal project in the American avant-garde black metal scene, formed in 1999 by Lord Samaiza and Algol. While sharing a name with several other global metal acts, this specific iteration is distinguished by its rejection of black metal tropes in favor of a dissonant, jazz-inflected sound.

Their work, particularly the 'Into Shadows' series, is noted for its use of upright bass and contra-bass, instruments rarely seen in the genre, which provide a woody, organic counterpoint to the distorted guitars. The band's career arc is defined by a move toward increasingly abstract and challenging structures, culminating in the dense, multi-part 'Act' albums. Critically, they are often grouped with the 'USBM' movement but occupy a more experimental niche alongside acts like Lurker of Chalice or Leviathan. Their influence is felt most strongly in the 'black-jazz' and dissonant metal sub-sectors, where their lo-fi, high-concept approach proved that extreme metal could be both raw and intellectually rigorous.
