Banjo or Freakout

Banjo or Freakout is the solo moniker of Italian-born, London-based musician Alessio Natalizia. Emerging in the late 2000s blog-era, the project became a cornerstone of the 'glo-fi' or hypnagogic pop movement, characterized by a DIY bedroom-production aesthetic and a heavy reliance on atmospheric textures.

Natalizia's sound identity is defined by a dense layering of analog synths, heavily processed guitars, and vocals that function more as textural elements than narrative leads. His career arc saw a transition from experimental EPs and a prolific series of covers to a more structured, yet still ethereal, full-length debut recorded with Nicolas Vernhes. Natalizia is also notable for his work in the duo WALLS, which leaned further into the Kompakt-style ambient techno sound. Critically, Banjo or Freakout is praised for his ability to evoke profound nostalgia and 'hauntological' moods without relying on cliché, positioning him alongside peers in the No Pain In Pop scene. His work remains a high-water mark for the intersection of indie-rock sensibilities and electronic experimentation from the early 2010s.
