Foxes in Fiction

Foxes in Fiction is the solo project of Toronto-born, New York-based artist Warren Hildebrand, a pivotal figure in the 2010s bedroom pop and lo-fi movements. As the founder of the Orchid Tapes label, Hildebrand helped define an aesthetic characterized by intimate recording techniques, emotional vulnerability, and a DIY ethos that influenced a generation of indie artists.

The project's sound identity has evolved from the sprawling, trippy sound collages of 'Swung from the Branches' (2010) to the more refined, song-oriented 'Ontario Gothic' (2014), which dealt heavily with themes of loss and the death of a close friend. Hildebrand's work is notable for its use of 'voice as instrument,' often burying vocals in lush layers of delay and saturation to create a submerged, ethereal effect. Critically, the project is lauded for its ability to elevate 'bedroom' production into something sophisticated and cinematic, blending the influence of 4AD-era dream pop with modern ambient-electronic techniques. Their 2019 release, 'Trillium Killer,' further expanded this palette, introducing more varied vocal characters and lounge-pop elements while maintaining the core signature of melancholic, atmospheric drift.
