Bewitched

Founded in Umeå, Sweden, in 1995, Bewitched emerged as a pivotal force in the blackened thrash revival. The band was a supergroup of sorts, featuring Anders Nyström (Blackheim) of Katatonia and Marcus E.

Norman (Vargher) of Ancient Wisdom. Their mission was a deliberate rejection of the then-dominant melodic death metal and symphonic black metal trends, opting instead for a 'retro' sound that paid homage to the first wave of black metal (Venom, Bathory, Hellhammer) and mid-80s thrash. Their debut, 'Diabolical Desecration', remains a landmark for its raw energy and stylistic purity. Despite lineup changes, including Blackheim's departure to focus on Katatonia, the band maintained a consistent output on Osmose Productions, a label synonymous with extreme metal's underground elite. Their influence is felt in the modern 'black-thrash' scene, bridging the gap between traditional heavy metal songwriting and extreme metal aesthetics. Critically, they are respected for their authenticity and refusal to modernize their sound, maintaining a cult status among metal traditionalists and vinyl collectors.
