At a time when the Norwegian black metal scene was becoming increasingly symphonic or avant-garde, Nocturnal Breed looked backward to the 'unholy trinity' of 80s thrash: Sodom, Destruction, and Kreator, while incorporating the South American savagery of Sarcófago. This 'blackened thrash' approach was a reaction against the perceived loss of 'rock and roll' spirit in the extreme metal scene. Their debut, 'Aggressor', established a template of raw production, high-tempo riffing, and a lyrical focus on urban decay and metal culture rather than mythological themes. Despite frequent lineup changes and label shifts, they have remained a cornerstone of the 'black-thrash' subgenre, influencing a younger generation of bands like Deathhammer. Critical consensus views them as a 'musician's band,' often featuring members from elite acts like Dimmu Borgir and Gehenna blowing off steam with more primitive, visceral material.
