The band, led by Charlie Hilton and Jacob Portrait (who later became a member of Unknown Mortal Orchestra), initially focused on a synth-heavy, drum-machine-driven sound that prioritized atmosphere and texture.
Their 2011 self-titled debut is considered a cornerstone of the era's 'indie-sleaze' adjacent dream pop scene. However, their 2013 follow-up, 'Imperium', marked a radical shift toward analog instrumentation, ditching synths for acoustic guitars and cellos, influenced by 1960s psych-folk and krautrock. This evolution showcased their versatility, moving from digital murk to a clearer, more direct sonic vision. Critically, they are praised for balancing Hilton's California-cool vocal aesthetic with the gritty, post-punk roots of the Portland scene.
