Formed in 2004 in New Smyrna Beach, Florida, Catalepsy emerged as a significant player in the first major wave of deathcore. While the name 'Catalepsy' has been used by numerous metal acts globally, the Florida outfit distinguished themselves through a focus on 'beatdown' aesthetics integrated with technical death metal flourishes.

Their 2008 album 'Iniquity' remains a touchstone for the genre, showcasing the transition from the melodic influences of early metalcore to the more brutal, breakdown-centric sound that would dominate the late 2000s. The band's sound identity is characterized by extreme low-end frequencies, high-production compression, and a lyrical focus on mortality and existential dread.
