Clair Obscur

Formed in 1981, Clair Obscur stands as one of the most intellectually rigorous and visually oriented groups of the French coldwave movement. Led by brothers Christophe and Nicolas Demarthe, the project was never content with standard rock tropes, instead integrating elements of jazz, classical music, and performance art into a sound they termed 'Rock Artaud.'

Their early career was defined by high-concept live shows that often involved elaborate sets and multidisciplinary collaborations, such as their infamous performance at Théâtre Déjazet where they destroyed a bucolic stage set. Sonically, they bridge the gap between the aggressive industrialism of Killing Joke and the pastoral gloom of And Also the Trees. Their discography, particularly 1987's 'In Out,' is characterized by a mix of brittle guitars, deep baritone vocals, and unexpected chamber instrumentation. Critically, they are regarded as a 'musician's band,' influential within the darkwave and gothic subcultures for their uncompromising artistic vision and their ability to evoke complex, often uncomfortable atmospheres without relying on genre cliches.
