Formed in Sydney in 1989, The Clouds (often referred to as 'The' Clouds to distinguish from electronic and metal namesakes) were a cornerstone of the Australian indie rock explosion. Led by Jodi Phillis and Trish Young, the band's identity was built on a foundation of complex vocal interplay and a rejection of standard rock song structures.
Their sound incorporated elements of shoegaze and dream pop but maintained a distinctly sharp, angular edge characteristic of the 90s alternative underground. Over four albums, they evolved from the raw energy of their early EPs to the more experimental and polished textures of 'Futura'. Critically, they are lauded for their harmonic sophistication, which influenced a generation of Australian indie artists.
