Austrian black metal that breathes with the rhythm of the forest. Intimate acoustic passages and soaring violins meet raw, whispered intensity for deep contemplation.
Dornenreich is an Austrian musical project led by Jochen 'Evíga' Stock, founded in 1995. Initially emerging from the melodic and symphonic black metal scene of the late 90s, the band quickly distinguished themselves through a focus on poetic, philosophical German lyrics and a highly dynamic, emotional performance style.
Their early work, particularly 'Bitter ist’s dem Tod zu dienen,' utilized traditional black metal tropes but infused them with a gothic, theatrical sensibility. The 2001 release 'Her von welken Nächten' serves as their creative watershed, introducing a more avant-garde approach to structure and vocal delivery that moved away from genre cliches toward a more personal, 'inner' sound. Following this, the band underwent a radical transformation, culminating in the entirely acoustic 'In Luft geritzt' (2008), which redefined their sound through the interplay of acoustic guitar and violin. Critically, Dornenreich is respected for their refusal to engage in the political or shock-value controversies of black metal, instead focusing on nature, mortality, and the human psyche. They occupy a unique space in the Prophecy Productions roster, bridging the gap between extreme metal and neofolk.
